If you've ever taken a history class, you probably learned a few things from the old Seven Wonders of the World. In recent years there has been much debate on the appointment of seven new wonders of the world. Certainly,
everyone has an opinion that the sites in the world should be at the
top of the list, but popular opinion seems to agree that the following
sites are among the most beautiful:
The Great Wall of China
The Colosseum in Rome
The Taj Mahal
Petra in Jordan
The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil
Chichen Itza in Mexico Pyramin
Machu Picchu in Peru
Each
of these sites has something for him, if the size of it, such as the
Great Wall and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, or greatness, like the
Taj Mahal. Other sites are revered for their historical significance, while others are amazing by a combination of factors.
Machu Picchu in Peru, is one of those sites. Located in the Andes, Machu Picchu is believed to have served as a royal estate and religious retreat. Historians believe it was built between 1460 and 1470 by an Incan ruler. The
old town contains about 200 buildings, most of which are residential,
but there are also some public buildings, including temples. Most buildings of Machu Picchu was built with granite blocks fit together without the use of mortar. This is somewhat surprising given the tight fit of the blocks, even today. Perhaps
one of the most fascinating things of this ancient city, however, is
how the landscape and the existing stone formations have been carefully
integrated into the training of the city. Sit temples perched on cliffs carefully, while the sculptures were carefully carved rock formations.
Machu Picchu remained hidden and forgotten by the outside world after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. It was not until 1911 that the ancient city was rediscovered by a Yale professor.
Today
Machu Picchu has been carefully preserved for modern generations can
learn about the ancient culture, who took care to build a large and
fascinating city. Although
Machu Picchu is always a difficult place to access, one of the reasons
why I was able to survive in such good condition over the past
centuries, no visit to Peru would be complete without experiencing the
beauty and majesty Machu Picchu.
Visitors who plan to travel to Machu Picchu will be accessed from the nearby city of Cusco. From there, visitors have four options to get to the old town, train, on foot, by bus or by helicopter. Most
visitors choose to take the train to the ruins in the morning, allowing
them plenty of opportunities for exploration, before returning to Cusco
by train in the afternoon. If you're feeling adventurous, hike the Inca Trail is another option that allows you to reach the city by the sun door. Visitors who choose this option to sleep in tents and you can opt for either two days or four days trek. There are also buses that will take, as well as direct flights helicopters that take visitors to Machu Picchu.
